Shallow tectonic tremor activities in Hyuga-nada, Nankai subduction zone, based on long-term broadband ocean bottom seismic observations

چکیده

Abstract The study of slow earthquake activity, which occurs in the shallow and deep sides seismogenic zone, is crucial for understanding subduction zones, including variations frictional properties with depth interplate coupling. Observations at seafloor are necessary, particularly earthquakes occurring offshore areas; however, few observations such activity have been made. We conducted long-term seismic on Hyuga-nada region, located western end Nankai Trough, to characterize low-frequency tremor from 2014 2017. Although these lasted only a years, occurrence frequency tremors was lower than that major involving migration occurred once every two or more years. In contrast, minor duration days several times year. Major activities 2015 were accompanied by similar those 2013. 2013 characterized south north rate 30–60 km/day. However, west east migration, area extended further east. rates also much slower (several 20 km/day) These different likely reflect state coupling down-dip side area. Minor identified, triggered Nepal 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. Activity mainly focal regions activities. Very-low-frequency (VLFEs) concurrently tremors, their epicenters coincided within margin error. VLFEs mostly peripheral concentration zones. This indicates heterogeneities present along plate boundary.

The Monterey Bay broadband ocean bottom seismic observatory

We report on the installation of a long-term buried ocean-floor broadband seismic station (MOBB) in Monterey Bay, California (U.S.A.), 40 km off-shore, at a water depth of 1000 m. The station was installed in April 2002 using a ship and ROV, in a collaborative effort between the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory (BSL). The station is loca...

Slow earthquakes linked along dip in the Nankai subduction zone.

We identified a strong temporal correlation between three distinct types of slow earthquakes distributed over 100 kilometers along the dip of the subducting oceanic plate at the western margin of the Nankai megathrust rupture zone, southwest Japan. In 2003 and 2010, shallow very-low-frequency earthquakes near the Nankai trough as well as nonvolcanic tremor at depths of 30 to 40 kilometers were ...

Thermal considerations in inferring frictional heating from vitrinite reflectance and implications for shallow coseismic slip within the Nankai Subduction Zone

Frictional properties within the upper few kilometers of subduction zones are generally thought to inhibit rupture propagation. Understanding whether large rapid slip propagates to the surface during megathrust earthquakes is important for characterizing tsunami hazard. Recent vitrinite reflectance analysis by Sakaguchi et al. (2011) on cores from the NanTroSEIZE drilling transect at the Nankai...

Tectonics of the Kyushu-ryukyu Arc as Evidenced from Seismicity and Focal Mechanism of Shallow to Inter- Mediate-depth Earthquakes

Tectonic features of the Kyushu-Ryukyu arc have been investigated in detail, on the basis of seismicity and focal mechanism of shallow to intermediatedepth earthquakes with magnitudes around and greater than 5.0. All shallow earthquakes in the Hyuga-nada region east of Kyushu are characterized by low-angled thrust faulting, which may be directly related to the underthrusting of the Philippine S...

Long-period ocean-bottom motions in the source areas of large subduction earthquakes

Long-period ground motions in plain and basin areas on land can cause large-scale, severe damage to structures and buildings and have been widely investigated for disaster prevention and mitigation. However, such motions in ocean-bottom areas are poorly studied because of their relative insignificance in uninhabited areas and the lack of ocean-bottom strong-motion data. Here, we report on evide...
